Jason's Story - Bassist, Songwriter

Jason’s earliest memories of music involve banging on instruments at his grandparents' house, whether it was his grandpa’s organ or guitar. With music constantly playing on the radio at home, he fell in love with his first song, "Come And Get Your Love" by Redbone, at just three years old.

At 12, Jason began to shape his own musical identity, drawn to bands like Van Halen, AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Quiet Riot, and Ratt. To this day, Van Halen remains his favorite. Around the same age, he developed a wide-ranging taste, diving into hip-hop through late-night FM radio with groups like Grandmaster Flash, UTFO, Run-DMC, and the Beastie Boys. Growing up in the '80s, Jason also soaked up pop icons like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, and Men at Work. His interest in reggae and punk emerged through bands like The Police and The Clash.

By 15, Jason was exploring classic rock, discovering legends like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, and Pink Floyd. Thanks to college radio in the mid-80s, he found alternative music and artists like The Cure, Depeche Mode, and The Smiths. As the decade progressed, Jason ventured into metal, listening to pioneers like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, and Iron Maiden, and thrash bands like Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, and Megadeth. Seeing Metallica live in 1989 cemented his passion—he grew his hair out, bought his first drum set, and began learning to play. Shortly after, Jason joined his first band.

Over the years, Jason has played in various bands, developing a rich and diverse style. His journey led him to Born & Raised, where he met Will at an open mic at Outbreak Brewery in Placerville, CA. After playing a few songs together, Will invited Jason to join his new band. They initially performed under the name Jackson Whale, a collaborative nod to their original lineup. After a break in 2022, the band reformed in early 2023 with Britton, Will, and Jason as Born & Raised. With everyone contributing to the songwriting, the band’s energy and passion are at an all-time high.

Jason shares, “It’s really a thrill to play with such a talented group of musicians and songwriters.” He’s excited for the future of Born & Raised and what’s yet to come.
